Continued : Les: The next morning we set off with KK, Carol, and Isobel to the Theatre Monument-National where Roy performed his first plays as a student. Isobel taught me some decoy moves of her own (thanks, Isobel). I was getting nervous. My daughter had taught me a French phrase to say to Roy... I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to say it to him. Jutta gave me some advice about speaking to Roy. Jewels: We had breakfast and then launched right into the auction. So many Roy items to choose from...only so much cash! I, of course, did my part to support the foundation! Les: We both got some treasures, didn’t we, sis-tah? Jewels bid on and won a jewelry box that KK had made – and then gave it to me. I love you, sis-tah! Jewels: Yes, just to mention some of the wonderful action items there: Marcia’s wonderful Roy paintings, Mary Anne’s Scrap Book, KK’s jewelry box, Michel’s pictures, La Femme items, key chains, rare magazine clippings, and photos galore. I had a blast bidding on my most coveted treasures and I am happy to report that I won Mary Anne’s Scrap Book. I was able to view her book from last year...a work of art!!! I am so excited! Les: Then.....ROY!!! He looked happy and relaxed. He was wearing a grey t-shirt, jeans and the worn, black leather jacket. He brought an Aboriginal peace pipe (he got when filming The Timekeeper) and a disposable lighter (the one used to light his last cigarette). Lucky Maxine won that item! Jewels: We all happily followed Roy from basement to attic, literally, as he reminisced about his first plays and, of course, his first...kiss! Les: A couple of times, since we were walking back and forth down various hallways, Roy was right next to me. It was ..... GREAT! Jewels: And, many thanks to that elevator operator, for getting us stuck in the elevator...with Roy. (Insert every women’s fantasy!) Les: Roy sat by KK first.... I was a little jealous of our Mission Leader. Jewels: I took last minute notes of that “naughty nuzzler” in action. (For more info – see 08 Rivers) Les: Roy was very animated and there was a lot of laughter at all the tables. When he got to our table, Roy said he needed “to separate” us and sat between Jewels and me. Sigh.
Jewels: Roy WAS very
animated and talked of (sigh) the universe (I have a special fondness
for the universe now), Rivers Foundation, his new series (they better
not kill him off!) which he took so he could work on his boat, just to
name a few. (Up close, Les: After a few false starts, I was able to utter my practiced French phrase to Roy. He then signed a poster I won with the special phrase. The time with Roy passed too quickly and we rushed to get our pictures with him. Then we watched Roy’s very own copy of Je Me Souviens. Jewels: Céline and Roy gave stellar performances. And if I was the little girl, Némésis, I would bond with Roy too! Les: After lots of hugs, we left and went to dinner with KK, Carol, Isobel and Mary. Then, as we did almost every night, we returned to Mission Headquarters (KK’s room) for drinks, Roy viewing, Roy discussions and laughter. It was a wonderful event and I will treasure all the memories.
It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better RIVERS than I have ever attended...
Jewels: Yes sis-tah, it just gets better and BETTER! Thanks all, I can’t wait until we can meet again! Thanks Maxine, thanks Michel for another special event! And thanks, Roy!
