The red dots show the regions and dates in which Roy's paternal ancestors were married. In the 8 generations since Jean-François Dupuis Jolicoeur came to Canada from Périgord in France in 1688 as an 18 year-old soldier, the Dupuis line lived and died in a tight little circle of communities around Trois-Rivières. This tradition ended in 1961 when Normand-Roy, a commercial traveller, married into the Thiffault family at Amos, some 700km (435 miles) to the north-west. Jacques Tifault arrived from the Gironde region of Bordeaux in 1684 aged 26 (occupation unknown), and married the eldest daughter of a family who had settled some 20 years earlier. For 9 generations (the green dots) they lived and died slightly to the east of the Dupuis family, around Saint-Stanislas (Emilie Bordeleau country), until Ryna Thiffault married in Amos. Roy's actual birthplace, and place of residence for the first three months of his life, is New Liskeard, Ontario, which lies 240km (150 miles) south-west of Amos.
Roy's mother was a cousin of actress Marie
Tifo (Thifault, Thiffault, Tifo are all alternative spellings. Pronounce
them like the last one!) They share the same grandfather (Raoul), although
Ryna's father was born to Raoul's first wife, and Marie's to his second. |
