No one can unseat perennial faves Dupuis and Shatner (who swap spots from last year) << not true! - viv >>, though local up-and-comer Jay Baruchel is hot on their heels Bon Cop, Bad Cop’s bad cop Huard is close behind, and comedian Derek Seguin joins the list for the first time. Incidentally, Blasté came in #5 for Best Play. |

No surprise that hometown studs Dupuis and Shatner take the top spots, with father-son duo the Sutherlands also showing strong. But those venerable names have some competition: up-and-comer Toufexis has made his mark with the Montreal-based Untimely Ripped theatre company and roles in shows like Stargate: Atlantis and Smallville, while stage vet Lalla can be seen in the upcoming film adaptation of The Secret. Also look out for improv-er Dan Jeannotte when his Uncalled For comedy troupe take the Fringe this year with two shows and The 13th Hour, a live late-night talk show.

Wowing both audiences and critics alike with his recurring role in All-Bran ads, Captain Kirk proves that he’s better than ever (not to mention more regular). Which puts last year’s winner Roy Dupuis back in the runner-up position, a ranking the hunky actor is no stranger to (see 2002, 2003 and 2004.) Meanwhile, the rift between father and son widens with poor old Donald slipping two spots from last year as Kiefer’s 24 celebrity moves him up a spot. But the big news is C.R.A.Z.Y. star Marc-André Grondin making his debut on the top-10 while his co-star Michel Côté hangs tight, along with other BOM regs Rémy Girard (Les Boys IV) and Tristan D. Lalla (all-around popular guy and stage actor).

He's dead, Jim >> Roy Dupuis finishes off William Shatner's reign as Best Local Actor Roy Dupuis: the Susan Lucci of the Mirror's best-of awards or the victim of a ballot-stuffing campaign led by a splinter group of Trekkie terrorists? This is the question that has no-doubt been dogging the actor throughout his career. How could it not? Year after year, he took a backseat to William Shatner as Montreal's favourite actor. Well, those days are safely behind him now, because the people have spoken and the Mémoires affectives star is the new undisputed champ, an honour the modest actor predictably plays down. |

"I'm just flattered
being part of this group of nominees," says Dupuis. "And to tell you the
truth, I haven't been paying much attention to the results. I mean, when
you come in second, nobody calls you up to tell you, so you never hear
about it." Fair enough. But the question remains: who rocked the vote this year? Well, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that a majority of the voters were the kind of women who get wet just thinking about Patrick Swayze in his high-waisted jeans. After all, as well as being a gifted actor, Dupuis is a walking cologne ad - what with his chiselled bone structure, deep husky voice and smoldering onscreen presence. According to Dupuis, however, his sex symbol status is pretty much wasted on him. "It doesn't really change my life," says the 42-year-old man's man, who is calling from his work shed, where he's currently building a boat from scratch with his bare hands so he can sail around the world. "I just don't go out much anymore. But it was never something that I took advantage of... well, very much, anyway. I was always more interested in real relations. Maybe once in a while I indulged. But that was 10 years ago. I've been with the same woman for 10 years now." His monogamous relationship with actress Céline Bonnier isn't the only area in his life where Dupuis is militantly loyal. For years now, Hollywood has been calling and Dupuis always gives the same answer: "Maybe if Montreal disappears and falls off the face of the planet. Seriously, something really drastic in my life |

would have to happen
for me to move down there. Home for me is here and it always will be." As for helping Captain Kirk get through this difficult time, he's on his own as far as Dupuis is concerned. "I don't have any advice for Mr. Shatner," he says. "He's been number one all these years, I think he can handle coming in second for a change." |

Best Actor 1. William Shatner 2. Roy Dupuis 3. Rémy Girard 4. Kiefer Sutherland 5. Michel Côté 6. Omari Newton 7. Jay Baruchel 8. Elias Toufexis 9. Trent Pardy 10. Donald Sutherland |
As is clear (yet) again this year, Mirror readers have still not worked the Star Trek fromage thing out of their collective system. And Roy Dupuis, the ubiquitous vedette of screens big and small, is again at #2. Rémy Girard is a no-brainer, given his star turn in both The Barbarian Invasions and the massive hit TV sensation Les Bougon. Michel Côté gets spot #5 no doubt due to his performance as Patrick Huard's shrink in Sur le seuil. Meanwhile, theatre personalities Elias Toufexis and Trent Pardy are rapidly rising. While appearing in a production of Coriolanus at the Saidye last fall, Pardy drew comparisons to James Dean, Marlon Brando and Eminem.

Shatner, once again, wins easily. Many of the other actors have also skipped town, but they clearly have left an indelible mark on readers and upheld their thespian chic.

Scanning the results, something does appear to be clear: all of those theories about name recognition must be true. How else could someone as excruciating as Bill Shatner come ahead of someone as nuanced and brilliant as dear old Bluteau?

Our dear, enlightened readers seem to be taking a while to catch on about this category. (And it's only been 10 years.) For future reference, this is meant to be a vote on local types. People from here! Mssrs. Pitt, Stallone, Willis, Travolta et al don't really qualify. (We'll let Nic Cage fly, as he did shoot the Brian De Palma film Snake Eyes here, but that movie really, really sucked.)

Best Actor
1. Roy Dupuis 2. Luc Picard 3. Michel Côté 4. David La Haye |
Local heartthrob Roy Dupuis, currently starring in the of-questionable-quality TV series Nikita (shot in Toronto), again tops our list as best male actor. Locals appear to be a bit confused about where some actors come from; some cited Mr. Bean and Jeff Bridges, neither of whom reside in our fair city. William Shatner, everyone's favourite starship captain--if not the world's greatest actor--garnered one vote.

Best Actor
1. Roy Dupuis 2. Sylvie Drapeau 3. Remy Girard (noted for his appearance on the Dunkin' Donuts ads) |
Roy Dupuis tops our list again, and how he managed to survive that dud of a movie Screamers is beyond us, but apparently good looks can transcend really bad acting when it comes to star appeal.
