The Last Chapter: better than the first

The sequel to the Last Chapter, which began on Monday evening on Radio-Canada, is a lot better than the series shown last year, even though the French dubbing of gang boss Bob Durelle still leaves a lot to be desired. And his son’s too.

We are in an extremely violent world, where Bob Durelle, wearing a nasty smile of enjoyment, beats up one of his assistants. He needed to see the blood running into the milk spilt on  the floor.

And Ross Desbiens, played by Roy Dupuis, isn’t dead. He’s out to avenge his wife’s death. He decides to kill Durelle at a Triple Sixers wedding. He gets the monster in his sights and bang, the big American boss standing beside Durelle collapses.

Mr Durelle is well and truly in the shit. The unspeakable Roots Racine comes to his aid at a summit meeting held in the gents’ toilet of a big hotel.  You're still leader, Bob. Why spoil things between us for an outsider? Roots Racine (Dan Bigras) adding that it’s always better to stick by your worst enemy if you want to survive.

In short, a promising start, with the bonus of a very racy wedding reception during which the bride, perched on a Harley, does a striptease that turns into a fellatio session in the best possible taste. I don’t know if Ginette Reno saw anything of the sort at the wedding of Mom Boucher’s pal …. * << see below for explanation >>

Luc Dionne has had to change his script since Marina Orsini, who plays the wife of Bob Durelle, became pregnant. Durelle wonders whose baby it is, as she has run off to Florida with the two older children. His wife is a lot less submissive than in the first series.

We’re dying to see Durelle fall apart. Thank God Ross Desbiens decided to change his target in this first episode. We can predict that the decline of the boss will be long and painful.

The English version of the series begins on Wednesday 5th March on CBC with one episode lasting 2 hours. The 4 remaining episodes will be broadcast in 1 hour segments.
