'Love is more important than marriage'
ROY DUPUIS ENJOYS BEING ALONERoy Dupuis, who
plays the jagged Michael in LFN, is a modest man. As a total opposite to his character, he
doesn't run around looking for danger and speed, but he prefers to curl up on the sofa
with philosophic books and to enjoy french food he has cooked.
Roy Dupuis, the second of three children was a sports star
in his youth and he practiced almost every sport from ice hockey to volleyball. At
university sports were on the background and he concentratedon studying physics in which
he was majoring.
After having seen the movie 'Moliére' Dupuis became
inspired by acting. The next day he dropped his physics studies for acting. After
graduating he began his career in theater but movies brought him to the knowledge of
Canadian audience. The way was paved by 'How to make love to a negro without getting
tired' and 'Jesus of Montreal'.
- I think that an actor is a servant. First I serve the writer, then the director. As an
actor my job is to give everything: my imagination, my conscience, my body and even my
soul.
Dupuis, 35, takes his work seriously. The part as Nikita's mentor was a lucky strike for
him. He describes his character as a ghost compared with normal people who kills when
needed. He doesn't see much of himself in Michael.
- I differ from Michael and his coldness a lot. Yet I do bring myself and my sensitiveness
to my role, he says.
There is much more than acting in his life. The recently bought house in Montreal's
countryside keeps the man busy during the weekends. Saying the house is 'the best
investment of his life' he also says that he prefers digging soil to partying in the
night. A sign of that is also the decision to stop drinking alcohol that he made two years
ago.
Currently Dupuis lives satisfied in his new house reading and playing cello. As a hermit?
Not quite, although he admits that he doesn't have too many friends.
Dupuis, still single, says he's whole-heartedly in love, but despite of that marriage
isn't on the cards.
- Marriage is like a contract, both politically and economally. I can be faithful without
it - and I am when I'm in love. Love is more important to me than marriage.
Roy Dupuis' career is on its way up. LFN is popular in the USA and there's no end in
sight. Dupuis says he has enjoyed every moment of his career but he still hasn't achieved
his perfect dream. He wants to get to feel and know new things.
- I'd like to work with a dreamer. With someone who will help me to explore my own
imagination. I've had enough of realism. |
