What’s your opinion … Roy Dupuis?

With his smoker’s voice and dishevelled mane, Roy Dupuis is larger than life.  No doubt that’s why he was given the role of General Roméo Dallaire in Shake Hands with the Devil, which will be released later this year.  Courtesy of our English-speaking friends, Dupuis will also star in the drama Emotional Arithmetic, with Susan Sarandon and Christopher Plummer.  But the actor is not neglecting Quebec, as last month he began filming Truffe, a black comedy starring his partner Céline Bonnier.  In the meantime, Dupuis gives us his views.

For or against popcorn in the cinema?
I am neither for it nor against it.  It’s part of our North American cinema culture.  Certainly it can be a disturbance.  But if it’s eaten quietly I don’t see the problem.

The film scene that you’ll never forget?
The first one that springs to mind is in Barton Fink (the Coen brothers).  The lead character walks down the corridor of a hotel that’s on fire, puts the key in the door, opens it, goes inside, then closes the door.  I found that powerful and poetic.

What’s your favourite swear word?
I have a lot (laughs).  I use one for each occasion, but I think that ‘tabernac’ is very useful for emphasising an important point.

For or against Tom Cruise?
Neither for nor against. He’s made very good films and also very bad ones.

For or against red-carpet occasions?
Neither for nor against. They’re not my favourite events, but I understand the reason for them, especially for our film industry which needs them.

What film have you seen most often?
Brazil
(Terry Gilliam).  I was 16 or 17 and I must have seen it at least 15 times.

The worst job you’ve ever had?
That’s difficult to say … acting? (laughs)  I did summer jobs when I was a student, but I moved around a lot, so I didn’t have time to get bored.

Your favourite word?
Life.

If God exists, what will he say to you at Heaven’s gate?
(pause) This is the type of question I can’t answer because the answer is too closely associated with my attitude towards God.  I don’t know whether he exists or not, and I don’t want to make that assumption.

What is the very important question that I’ve forgotten to ask you?
(very long pause) Maybe the question that you think is important to ask.
