Maurice Richard, the man behind the legend We have been invited to the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul prison on the 4th July to watch some scenes of the film Maurice Richard being shot. Don’t worry, the “Rocket” was never locked up … but this prison is the ideal place to recreate the setting of the former Forum. The film begins with the famous riot that took place here in 1955. On the set we had the pleasure of meeting some of the stars of the film, including Roy Dupuis, who takes the part of the famous player. Roy Dupuis had the opportunity to meet Maurice Richard; the two men found they had things in common. Now Roy wants to pay tribute to him. Roy, in what way did you and Maurice resemble each other? He was an introvert and, in general, I am too. What was Maurice Richard to you? There is a part of his character which is legendary and which still remains. He was a sort of representative of the people, and sometimes it was difficult for him to believe it and to come to terms with it. Maurice was a man of integrity, both in his private life and on the ice. After having met him I can say that I began to understand his energy. That’s what I drew on to play the role. How did your meetings with Maurice Richard go? We chatted a lot. We both had a lot to talk about. We were both interested in each other. He almost became a friend. What is it about him that fascinates you? His strength and the intensity of his life. One that wasn’t always easy, but he always remained honest. It’s admirable. Do you feel that you have a good handle on the character? This is the third time I’ve played him and I learn more and more. Now that he’s dead it’s as if I feel a greater responsibility towards him. What is the underlying motive behind this film? One of the reasons for doing this film is the impact Maurice Richard made goes way beyond sport. I’m talking about the impact he had on French speakers as much as on English speakers. That’s one of the reasons that the film deserves to be made. The real subject isn’t hockey. How have you prepared for the role? I haven’t really trained, but we did have three weeks of hockey rehearsals. At four of five days each week, it helped me to lose my winter fat. < he laughs > And I’ve been keeping an eye on my diet because I knew I needed to put on a bit of muscle. < he laughs > |
