Studio interview with Sonia Benezra promoting Screamers

Sonia Benezra reminds him that when he started out he said that he wanted to win an Oscar. Was that still his goal? He says, “Not any more. He likes the craft such as it is.

What is the best bit about it? A bit of everything. When you’re filming something happens. There are moments that are really magical. It’s difficult to describe.

Do you get the feeling when you initially read the script? Yes there can be moments of magic at the time you read the script.

Does he like science fiction? Yes, he used to read it when he was younger. He like the fact that there’s a philosophy behind good science fiction, either a view of the way the world is heading, or a vision of a new world altogether. Screamers is in the first category – what will happen to a world which is based on profit and selfishness.

After seeing a clip of Screamers Sonia Benezra praises Roy’s screen presence.

He says that Peter Weller was very kind to him and helped him a lot, especially with his intonation. It was fun. He’s proud of the film, thinks it’s a good science fiction, and it carries the message that we are responsible for what we create.

Sonia Benezra noted that the screenplay was written by Ted O’Bannon, who also wrote the screenplays for Alien and Total Recall.

Next up is a singer called Loulou Hughes who sings the theme tune from Screamers called Hard Luck Solution. She kneels in front of each of the seated guests, ending with Roy, singing right into his face.

For the grand finale Sonia Benezra gets everyone up on the stage, and while everyone kisses Loulou, Sonia has to make Roy do it – he seems keen to distance himself as far as possible. While everyone else is bopping he and Bruno Pelletier are bizarrely deep in conversation at the edge of the group.
