421 - Up The Rabbit Hole
Writer/Director Peter Lenkov / Terry Ingram
Michael's POV

Onscreen:
29 minutes

The proposed meeting is set up in Mario’s restaurant, but Nikita makes initial contact by phone, and decides she can’t risk making an appearance. Section capture Grenet, but even with Madeline and Operations playing bad cop/horrendous cop he can’t lead them to Nikita. With all other sources of data exhausted, Michael’s intimate knowledge is the key to finding her. He works closely with Quinn to compile psychological data, while at the same time he discovers that she tried to sabotage Grenet’s capture. He deduces that Nikita is ‘hiding in plain sight’, disguised as Quinn, and tricks her into revealing this through her emotions. No sooner has Nikita tried to persuade him to escape with her, than Operations advises him that he will soon take over Section when George is removed from Oversight. Nevertheless he sets up a phoney mission to capture Nikita, and Section discover just too late that Michael’s files have also been sunk. He and the disguised Nikita take out the other team members, then head for the sea. On a sailing boat Nikita’s facial changes are improbably reversed, and while Section resources are combing the planet for them, they are relaxing on a distant beach. But nothing can be taken for granted, and the clanking of a loose cleat shows that Michael is never completely at ease.

Performance Rating
Roy’s primary purpose in this, one of his longest episodes, is to play the HR card to the hilt. Even in Section Michael is recounting confidences that conjure up past intimate conversations, and his outing of ‘Quinn’ is done with gentle caresses. Given the choice of running off with Nikita or being promoted to Operations, he has no hesitation in abandoning his old loyalties (not to mention mowing down Davenport) and sailing off into the sunset with his woman. In HR heaven, the series would have stopped there.

So does he succeed in lulling us into this romantic paradise? You bet. Freed from Section, his ‘Michael’ devices fall away and he becomes the perfect companion for a deserted beach. Who is this guy who is so pleased with himself for getting a fire going – a modern-day Ovila? He’s a far cry from Michael, but he certainly is cute!
