414 - Line In The Sand
Writer/Director Peter Lenkov / Joel Surnow
Michael's POV

Onscreen:
8 minutes

This Matthew Ferguson showcase deals with the final contest between Birkoff and Hillinger, who now works at Oversight. Following Birkoff’s discovery of elusive Red Cell leader The Cardinal, Michael leads Section’s assault, only to walk into a trap as Hillinger has tipped off The Cardinal in order to discredit Birkoff. The contest escalates into Section One vs Oversight, and as George sends a platoon to take over Section, a crack field team (Operations, Madeline, Nikita, Michael and Birkoff) form a mobile unit and succeed in tracking down the Cardinal.

Performance Rating
Apart from a tiny personal interchange with Nikita at the beginning ("Haven’t seen you in a while"), Roy’s performance is played entirely in grim mission mode. Was it my imagination, or did this episode play up the grimness almost to the level of parody? If indeed we could detect a heavy hand in Mr Surnow’s direction, then it was redeemed by the unusual piece of ensemble acting in the van – the multi-lingual overlapping exchanges being used to fine dramatic effect. Nice one Joel, and thanks for letting us have more of Roy’s French.
