Colin Higgins' classic
dark comedy proves once and for all that love and devotion knows no boundaries. The story
is about Harold, the suicidal 19 year old boy who finally learns how to truly live and
love when he meets up with that delightfully wacky octogenarian, Maude.Harold and Maude originally began as Higgins' project for UCLA film school,
and resulting feature starring Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon quickly became an underground
favourite. Higgins subsequently wrote the stage adaptation, and the play has appeared in
theatres across the country and in Europe; it opened Broadway during the 1980-81 season,
directed by Bobby Lewis. Colin Higgins died in 1988, at the age of 47, from AIDS
complications.
