The boy saw the dog then. The dog pulled its walker along and the
walker held on to the leash and dug each step into the ground to slow
and restrain the animal and with each step the man's boots were dredged
out of the dirt and rocks and tree roots and the dog lumbered panting
towards its master. Stratton stepped back and touched the boy's shoulder
and the boy stepped back with him. Fisk accepted the dog's leash
and the animal and the foreman touched noses and Fisk rubbed the dog's
chin and scratched the brute's broad ears.
This is King, Fisk told the boy. Hey, King, the boy said. He
watched Fisk rub the heavy mat of the dog's chest. The animal looked a
scruffy mix of Alsatian and husky. Or husky and wolf.
This here's the new timekeeper, Fisk told the dog and it was as though
he had given him an order to devour. The dog leapt at Martin
Bishop and snarled and barked excessively and drooled at the mouth and
the foreman's powerful grasp of the leash was the boy's only protection.
Fisk laughed as the dog barked and Martin Bishop stepped back several
more steps.
