Le Journal de Montréal, 16 Augiust 2008 - Céline Bonnier:  It was just a delight

A little friendly advice: watch the whole of the closing credits of Truffe before leaving the theatre.  That’s where you’ll see Céline Bonnier sharing several uncontrollable laughs with Jean-Nicolas Verreault.

“We laughed all day long!” said the actress about these hysterical bloopers that you can see during the closing credits, to the tune of the film’s theme, DJ Champion’s remix of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ hit, I Put a Spell on You.

“There were so many peculiar, crazy scenes to shoot that it wasn’t a chore to do.  It was completely surreal.  There are people it’s more difficult to be serious around, and for me Jean-Nicolas is one.  I certainly couldn’t work with him in the theatre.  We laughed way too much.”

But apart from these minor aberrations, Céline Bonnier says she took her character in Truffe very seriously.  Like any other role, in fact.

“Kim (Nguyen) wanted me to play it for real, like in a serious drama, and I believe it was the best thing to do.  Even though everything that’s happening round about is surreal and frenzied, it needs characters who exist, who are credible.  In some B-movies the actors play it straight.  That’s what’s odd and what makes you say, ‘Hey, that’s not right!’ In Attack of the Killer Tomatoes the actors played it for real, but what was ridiculous was that they were dealing with giant tomatoes …”

What was her initial reaction on reading the Truffe screenplay?

“I thought it was completely strange, but that quickly called out to me because I come from the theatre and a creative environment where you often encourage a more poetic and more abstract language than in the cinema.  I saw links with this in the screenplay and in Kim’s world.

Then, after speaking with Kim, I wanted to work with him.  Kim works in a delightful atmosphere.  Working under pressure and under tension – we’ve all done it and have to do it on occasion, but personally I don’t like it.”
